B1: My Inspirations

B1: My Media Inspirations

Having inspirations, especially in industries I am interested in, allows me to see what areas from their careers I would like to follow suit in, but also which areas that may not be best for me. Most of those who inspire me have been there for me to watch whilst growing up, therefore have had a massive impact on the person I am today and the person I hope to be in industry.

One of my biggest inspirations in media is Zoe Sugg. Not only was she someone for me to look up to growing up, she still continues to inspire me as I am starting to progress into adulthood. She started off as a blogger, which gained attention that was able to give her a huge YouTube platform (having nearly 11 million subscribers currently). Zoe has amassed a number of awards, from winning "UK's favourite vlogger" to being nominated for "Social Media Superstar" at the Global Awards. Her honesty about her mental health and journey with her struggles through her career is one of the things I admire about her most. She uses her platform in such a beneficial way, whilst bringing many people a lot of comfort and entertainment.

Another person who inspires me within the media industry is Roman Kemp. Throughout his career, he has presented national radio network Capital FM, with his own breakfast show, presented The X Factor UK, been a backstage reporter on Children In Need and presented an array of other things like the Global Awards and London's New Years’ celebrations. He is a huge television personality in the UK. Although his career is mainly credited to his father Martin Kemps’ fame, he still has had the opportunity to create a name for himself and work on major projects in the industry. His first gig with Capital FM was in November of 2014, presenting Sunday 6-9am and since then, climbed up to having his own breakfast show that is streamed nationwide. Roman is a great role model for me, as he works incredibly hard whilst being able to let his personality show in whichever job he is doing. Like Zoe Sugg, Roman has been recognised for being incredibly raw on his struggles and has consistently been an advocate for mental health and its' importance.

Scarlett Moffatt is yet another person I look up to within the media industry. She is best known for her presenting and massive TV personality.  Since appearing on Channel 4's Gogglebox and earning popularity there, she went on to win ITV's I'm a Celebrity ... Get me out of here! and has presented for Capital North East and Ant and Dec's Saturday night takeaway. She was a member of the 2013 show Beauty School Cop Outs, which I believe is what landed her the infamous part on Gogglebox from 2014-2016. She has always been an advocate for body-positivity, which I believe is something that should be pushed more for throughout the media industry. Scarlett is always incredibly candid, which I admire about personalities such as herself, as it proves she is in touch with herself and her audience and is able to connect with them.

These are just a few examples of people who have influenced me and stood as role models in terms of what I would love to do as a career. They all share a sense of authenticity while being able to produce and entertain their audiences.

Zoe Sugg uploaded this video in 2013 and I still to this day continue to be impacted by it and have carried her advice with me for nearly 10 years. The video was unlike her regular content, yet being able to use her platform to help people and use her own experiences to hopefully get through to her audience is something incredibly admirable. As I firsthand have been impacted by Zoe's content and have spent years knowing what it is like to be part of her audience, this has helped me understand that I would love to be able to do that for others.

Similarly, Roman Kemp touched on the importance of talking about your struggles, particularly for men, as this is something Roman unfortunately did not do with his late friend. The BBC 3 Documentary "Our Silent Emergency", opened a lot of peoples' eyes to the crisis that sadly does affect a lot of young men and features those who have had to deal with the awful effects of men who suffered in silence. Already being a fan of his, this documentary only proved my point as to why he was a good role model. Implementing to his audience to not be ashamed to express their feelings will be extremely beneficial. Again, being able to positively impact an audience while doing his job is something I aspire to do, in whatever area of the industry I end up doing.
