Careers and courses in Journalism at University of Sunderland


On Monday 13th December, we had a guest speaker come in from the University of Sunderland to talk about careers and courses in journalism. Andrew Glover has been in the media industry for over 30 years, and came to talk about the journalism course he is now a lecturer on. This took place within Sunderland College, in the theatre. Glover has an MA in Multimedia journalism in addition to this. 



He came extremely prepared, taking us through a powerpoint and explaining his own experiences in the industry and what the course can offer to future hopeful journalists. Glover has accumulated awards such as the Royal Television Society and Sony radio awards.      


We learnt where the course is held and some of the topics covered within it. Some of these include: 
  • Radio reporting
  • Video journalism
  • Sports journalism
  • Public affairs
Glover was extremely informative and taught us that he had connections with the BBC, ITV and Sky News. As he was passionate about his job and future journalists, I felt that I gained more knowledge about this sector and ways to get into it. 

Careers that Glover has opened my eyes to are: 

  • Market researcher
  • Translator
  • Communications
  • Photojournalism
This has helped in current projects, as part of my B1 is to look into higher education options, which I am now more knowledgable about because of this.

 Showreel Design Research To start with my showreel research, I took to YouTube to try and spot common themes throughout each one.  Upon my research, I found a playlist of other Year 2 Level 3 Media students' showreels. This was beneficial to my own, as I could apply or differ from the running themes of these videos.   Most of them included: Upbeat, energetic music Short snippets of each project spread out, to keep the attention of the audience Subtitles explaining each project Personal / business logo's to present each video These points make an effective showreel as the correct music is so important. Although the focal point of the video is the showcase of projects, having extravagant or inappropriate  music will not aid in the effectiveness of a showreel. B1: Final Website Design

 Final Website Design After the feedback I received from my peers on my Google Form, this is the final version of my website  . Taking suggestions from my peers, I added an "Industry Inspirations" section to my "About Me" page and my LinkedIn to the "Contact" page. I decided to update my website with these additions as my peers' opinions are important, due to them knowing what they would like to see out of a website. These suggestions allow the viewer of my website to become more knowledgable on who I am and how they can find me.

 Mock Interview Preparing Practice Media company- BBC -They provide news based on British Values of accuracy, impartiality and fairness. Their website states they want to bring news to "help people understand and engage with the world around them" -The BBC wants to reflect the UK, its culture and values to the world -They put their audience at the heart of everything they do Their interviews (usually with 2 or 3 BBC workers) want to know all about your skills, achievements and behaviours. To help prepare us for the mock interviews, which are part of our personal progression unit, we were given the chance to write an example answer in response to the statement 'Give an example of a time you worked in a team'.
